I finally read it!
I remember trying to read this a couple years ago and could only make it a chapter or two. I just couldn’t disconnect from the original trilogy and the characters.
After enough time away from it, I was able to go into this duology with the mindset that it’s its own story. I think it helps that you don’t see Jude or Cardan on the page yet, otherwise a reader might just be waiting to get to the next scene with them. Instead, we’re given little glimpses that tie into the world we already know.
I like that book one is Wren’s POV. We already know about Oak and his family, so it helps to really get to know Wren and who she really is beyond what we’ve already seen.
I’m still not a huge fan of Tiernan. I get why he was protective of Oak and mistrusting of Wren, but seeing everything through Wren’s eyes made Tiernan’s treatment seem unwarranted.
I actually really liked the ending. Wren has been treated so poorly (extreme understatement) and we see the toll the emotional neglect has had on her. For Oak’s “betrayal” to finally harden her makes sense.
I enjoyed being back in this world and am excited for book two in Oak’s POV. I look forward to seeing Wren as Queen in the next book and coming into her own.
